Time to Take the Next Step, for Our King and Ourselves
Over the past week, the world has again witnessed the deep love and respect that Thais have for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
During the morning of December 5, tens of thousands lined the route that he traveled from Siriraj hospital to the Grand Palace; many had camped out on the footpaths the night before so that they could get a better chance of catching a glimpse of him when his motorcade passed by. Unlike in some countries, these people were not recruited by the chambers of commerce to impress their political leaders. What the Thais did came from their hearts. Seeing the King even for a second gives them so much joy that for some would last a life time.
On this occasion, it meant even more for them as His Majesty had just recovered from a long illness suffered since September. Many said that they would gladly trade their good health for his illness if that could be done. Some would do even more.
Live telecasts repeatedly showed tears welling up in numerous eyes or running down countless cheeks every time the royal anthem was played during the many ceremonies marking the 82nd anniversary of his birth. Over many decades that I have traveled the world, I have witnessed nothing of this sort anywhere else. It is, therefore, understandable if foreigners seem puzzled by such expressions of feelings toward the King. However, expressing deep love and respect for His Majesty is no longer enough. It is time for us Thais to do more – for him and for ourselves.
The Thai government said that it would print His Majesty’s speech of December 5 and distribute it to the cabinet and government officials so that they may use it as a guide for carrying out their duties. Although his short speech contains valuable words of wisdom, how it will increase the government’s effectiveness remains uncertain. But one thing is certain: if political leaders and government officials had followed some of His Majesty’s advice given over his 63-year reign, Thailand would not have been in the mess as it is today.
Instead of handing out that speech, I would suggest that the government make available a version of the Sufficiency Economy philosophy, with some detailed explanation in easy-to-understand language, to all Thais and ask them to study it carefully and use it as a guide in their daily lives. I choose Sufficiency Economy because it is suitable both for individuals to use at the personal level and for the people in leadership positions to use in their work of managing the country.
Thais are already familiar with the term “sufficiency economy” and I would venture to say that many can readily recite its five principles – knowledge, morality, moderation, reasonableness, and immunity from unexpected events. I would venture to say also that the Thais’ attitude toward these five principles is similar to what they hold towards the five basic Buddhist precepts – they have committed all to memory without ever attempting to thoroughly understand them or seriously use them as a guide in their daily lives.
Reflecting a similar attitude, the government always refers to Sufficiency Economy but apparently without actually committing to use it as a framework for its policies. I also seriously doubt that all ministers understand it.
However, if I am wrong and the government is indeed using Sufficiency Economy as the framework for its policies, it should redress the situation. To this end, besides making a version with easy-to-understand explanation widely available, the government ought to make sure that all ministers and high-ranking government officials are be able to explain how each of its various policies and measures fits into the Sufficiency Economy framework.
As for us Thais, I would urge that we take the time to thoroughly understand this priceless gift from His Majesty and try to apply it in our daily lives. This will be the best expression of love and respect that we all have for him. It will not only make him happy but also put our lives and our country on a solid path toward peaceful and sustainable development.

วันที่มีความหมายกับคนทั้งประเทศจริงครับ ผมมั่นใจว่า สามารถพูดแทนได้เลยครับ พวกเราคนไทยร้อยละ 99.99 % (ไม่เต็ม 100 % เพราะเศษที่เหลือเอาไว้ให้กับพวกหนักแผ่นดินครับ) ล้วนแล้วแต่อยากจะเห็นพระพักต์ และพระอาการของท่านในปีนี้กันทุกคนนะครับครับ เมื่อคุณหมอเข็นรถที่ท่านประทับออกมา ผมคิดว่าพวกเราคนไทยรู้สึกโล่งใจกันทุกนะครับ แม้ว่าท่านอาจะดูอิดโรยบ้าง แต่ก็สร้างความชุ่มชื่นหัวใจให้พวกเราทุกคนนะครับ อาจารย์ครับผมว่า สาเหตุประการหนึ่งที่ทำให้สังคมไทยตกต่ำลงตามความคิดของผม น่าจะมาจากการห่างวัดด้วยนะครับ เพราะจากสภาพสังคมสมัยก่อน วัด คือ ศูนย์กลางของการเกิดกิจกรรมต่างๆ ของสังคมไทยนะครับ ซึ่งผมคิดว่า การหาแนวทางสร้างกลไกให้คนเข้าหาวัดน่าจะแนวทางหนึ่งที่จะสนับสนุนแนวทางของท่านด้วยนะครับ แต่คงต้องสังคายนาระบบพระในประเทศไทยควบคู่ด้วยนะครับ
อาจารย์ครับ พระสงฆ์ กับ วัดไทย ในต่างประเทศ มีรูปแบบและการปฏิบัติเป็นอย่างไรบ้างครับ เพราะจากที่ผมเคยอ่านบทความตาม Web ต่างๆ คนไทยที่อยู่ต่างประเทศ มักจะจัดกิจกรรมที่วัดนะครับ ซึ่งผมคิดว่า ระบบวัด และพระสงฆ์ โดยรวมในต่างประเทศน่าจะเคร่งครัดในศีลธรรมมากพอสมควรใช่ไหมครับ

ข้อแรก – ผมแน่ใจว่าคนไทยเกือบทั้งหมดคิดอย่างคุณคิด จำนวนมากถวายชีวิตได้ถ้ารู้ว่าในหลวงจะทรงอยู่เป็นมิ่งขวัญของชาติไทยสืบไป
ข้อสอง – เรื่องวัดต้องเลิกยึดติดแค่รูปแบบและพิธีกรรม “เนื้อหา” น่าจะสำคัญกว่ามาก เรื่องนี้สลับซับซ้อนยิ่ง หลายฝ่ายต้องร่วมมือโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งฝ่ายสงฆ์เอง ซึ่งต้องแตกทั้งหลักศาสนาและทันโลก นั่นคือ ต้องเป็นสงฆ์จริง ไม่ใช่ห่มผ้าเหลืองแล้วเป็นได้ เรื่องนี้ต้องพูดกันยาว
ข้อสาม – วัดและการไปวัดของคนไทยในต่างแดนสะท้อนสังคมไทยในเมืองไทย ส่วนปลีกย่อยอาจต่างออกไปบ้าง แต่โดยรวมผมยังมองว่าไม่ต่างมากนัก
การพูดถึงสองประเด็นมักทำให้ทะเลาะกัน – ศาสนากับการเมือง ผมพูดเท่านี้คงมีคนรำคาญแล้วละ
ครับอาจารย์ ศาสนา กับ การเมือง เป็นเรื่องที่สร้างความแตกคอ และแตกแยกได้มากที่สุดครับ โดยส่วนตัวนะครับ ผมว่า กิจของสงฆ์ น่าจะมีการปฏิรูปกันจริงๆนะครับ เอาแบบให้ชัดๆ เลยนะครับ อะไรควรทำและไม่ทำ ซึ่งตัวผมเอง คิดอยู่เสมอว่า หน้าที่หลักของพระสงฆ์คือการเผยแพร่หลักคำสอนเท่านั้น แต่การไปให้ถึงจุดหมายของการเผยแพร่อาจจะใช้กุศลเจตนาอย่างอื่นมาเป็นตัวช่วย หรือ ตัวเร่ง ให้มันเกิดเร็วขึ้นนะครับ อันนี้ก็ต้องขึ้นอยู่กับสติปัญญาของพระสงฆ์ด้วย แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม และที่สำคัญที่สุด การเมือง ไม่ใช่กิจของสงฆ์ที่จะเข้ายุ่งเกี่ยวนะครับ แต่อาจจะยกเป็นอุทาหรณ์ได้ แต่ไม่ควรชี้นำ หรือ เอาสถานการณ์การเมืองมาสร้างความน่าเชื่อถือให้กับตนเองนะครับ
เนื่องจากผมมองว่าเรื่องบทบาทของศาสนาในยุคนี้มีความสลับซับซ้อนยิ่ง ถ้าถามผม ผมก็ต้องบอกว่าถึงเวลาจะต้องมีการร่วมหัวกันคิดว่าจะทำอะไรอย่างไรต่อไปเพื่อให้บทบาทของศาสนาเหมาะสมกับสภาพสังคมของยุคโลกาภิวัตน์ เรื่องนี้ทำยากมากเพราะตอนนี้มีประเด็นของวัตถุเข้ามาครอบงำผู้อยู่ในวงการศาสนาจนลืมหูลืมตาไม่ขึ้น พูดไปก็ทะเลาะกันเนื่องจากพวกที่แอบศาสนาหากินจะไม่ยอมรับการเปลี่ยนแปลงเด็ดขาด มีผู้ที่อยู่ในวงการศาสนาที่ฉลาดกว่าผมจำนวนมาก พวกท่านก็ทำเฉพาะส่วนของท่านเพราะคงไม่อยากทะเลาะกับพวกมารเหล่านั้น
บทความนี้ผมได้รับการติดต่อจากฝรั่งหลายคนที่รู้จักเมืองไทย บางคนเป็นฝรั่งจากกาฬทวีปซึ่งมีปัญหาสารพัดถึงกับอดตาย เขาบอกว่าคนไทยยังไม่รู้ว่าตนเองโชคดีแค่ไหน เขาพูดถึงรายละเอียดว่าเพราะอะไร แต่ผมจะไม่นำมาเสนอ เพราะหลาย ๆ คนคงทราบแล้ว ที่เขาเป็นห่วงคือ ถ้าคนไทยทำลายความโชคดีนี้เสีย กว่าจะรู้ตัวก็จะพบว่ามันสายเกินแก้แล้ว
